Christmas in Japan

I have lived in Japan for just over twenty years and spent at least fifteen of them here. Recently my wife asked me if I have a favorite memory of Christmas. My sense of self-preservation kicked in very quickly and I immediately replied, "Our wedding, of course". Yoshiko and I were married on December 25, 1998.
But her question was more centered around my years living and growing up in Canada. I thought it was an interesting question since I have always felt the Japanese just don't "get" the meaning of Christmas. It is one reason I don't esepecially enjoy Christmas here... and maybe why I suggested our wedding day for December 25. To have a better reason for a celebration.
Inheritently, the Japanese don't relate to Christianity. Weddings are often held in mock churches with theatrical non-ordained ministers. For Christmas, it is all about romance and lights... and chicken. If you want to know more, search for the facts. For me, the true meaning of the holidays and the special tranquility of a winter Christmas are lost here. I can't wait to get back to Canada and allow Yoshiko to experience what is really means.
