Carrot Farming

Today was possibly my final volunteer shift of the year at the UBC Farm. Yesterday was the coldest day in almost 90 years. Note: How accurate were temperature recordings ninety years ago? The overnight temperatures were just over freezing last night so it was chilly at the Farm.

Just four volunteers showed up this morning and we headed out into the fields to harvest some of the remaining carrots. The sun barely peeked above the treetops and it was chilly work to pull up the carrots and twist off the tops.

About an hour into the work the Farm staff asked me if I would be willing to return to the Harvest Hut and wash the carrot harvest. After a quick orientation to the root vegetable washer I was left alone to perform the washing.

A lot of fun, easy to do and a wonderfully warm place to work. At the end of my three-hour shift I still had several crates of carrots yet to wash so I stayed on for an extra hour. I don't like to leave a job unfinished.

And I snacked on the culled carrots that were too small to sell... but sweet and refreshing.
