Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are among the smallest of creatures. Found only in North, Central and South America, hummingbirds are the only birds that can hover and fly backwards. The most common here in British Columbia is the Rufous Hummingbird.
With our initial landscaping done on our patio and in the midst of summer we have been observing the occasional hummingbird visiting our flowers. We had previously seen them near our temporary home in south UBC last winter and marvelled they remained over the cooler months.
Today we visited a store specializing in wild bird feeding and bought a feeder for hummingbirds. The owner said these are tame enough to land on your finger given enough patience.
