The Nutcracker Suite: Two Ways
This afternoon Yoshiko and I attended a holiday concert at the nearby Chan Centre. The Vancouver Pops were teamed up with the 45th Ave Jazz Band to perform Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.
Maestro Girard led the Vancouver Pops Symphony though the iconic ballet suite but with a twist. After each movement, the 45th Ave Jazz Band under Director Jaelem Bhate, performed the jazz arrangements of the same work by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.
Brilliant!
It was like sipping a delicate Japanese sake (the traditional version as performed by the Vancouver Pops symphony) and then a mature Barolo in a huge Riedel glass (the jazz band).
