Paying for ophthalmology

Today I went to a local eye clinic to have my eyes and vision checked. For at least the past eighteen years I have relied on my wife (as an ophthalmologist) to check, consult and supply my vision needs. Rarely paid for examinations in Japan and never for eyeglasses and contact lenses. To paraphrase Woody Allen, "Everyone gets something for free".
The tests went well and my current vision prescriptions remain correct for me. A good thing since I still have about 14 months of contact lenses.
Being nearsighted, the doctor recommended some "office glasses" to use over my contact lenses while using computers and reading.
But I will have to pay for them, just like the examination. Back to reality.
