Bike Room Clean Up
Shortly after we moved into our condo I noticed the bicycle storage room contained a significant number of bikes that appeared to be abandoned. Dusty, broken and with flat tires. Over the ensuing months, most of these bikes remained exactly as they were.
Late last year I initiated a project to clean up our bike room. Rid the room of abandoned bikes, improve security and encourage residents to feel confident about keeping bike there.
Around the start of the year I affixed bright orange ribbons to each bike in the room. We informed residents to remove the ribbon from any bike they owned. Allowing for a reasonable time period, any bikes with a ribbon still attached could be considered abandoned and removed.
Today was the deadline and I cut the locks of most of the remaining bikes, leaving behind a couple of bikes that were still in great condition. I took the old bikes to The Bike Kitchen at UBC as a donation.
Finally, I removed the sign, "Bicycle Storage" from the entrance door to the bike storage. No use in advertising where our residents' bikes are kept!
