Cataract Surgery
Tonight I returned from a three-day trip to Edmonton to assist my father with the first of two cataract surgeries. Thankfully everything went better than expected although a long wait at the hospital on Thursday morning. We arrived at 7:30 am as scheduled but he didn't have the surgery until 10:30 am. One of the nurses asked me to reconfirm his birth date since she couldn't believe he was 96 years old. I got the chance to use the joke, "My father is so old they have discontinued his blood type".
He had a nap in the afternoon and since then his eye has shown remarkable recovery. I took him to the doctor the next day for a checkup and everything looks okay. He will return to the hospital in one week to have the other eye done.
I always enjoy time spent with my father (except sleeping on his sofa) and I am amazed at his fortitude and stamina at his age. We enjoyed lots of conversations, a walk through a nearby park and a couple of belts of good scotch together.
