Close-knit

Today I took Yoshiko to see a film at the Vancouver International Film Festival. I have hesitated to take her to movies in Vancouver since they are all in English and the offerings haven't even interested me much. But since the VIFF featured many foreign films, I thought it would be a good chance to see a Japanese movie.

I chose the movie, "Close-knit" by the director, Naoko Ogigami. It is her gentle, sweet-souled celebration of alternative family structures, in which a maternally neglected young girl finds security in the care of her uncle and his transgender partner.

At first I was concerned the movie was nothing more than a Japanese TV drama on the big screen. But both of us really enjoyed the story and thought it was well done. Especially considering the theme of the story is very uncommon for Japan. I learned later it was based on the director's experiences with transgender individuals in the US.

Yoshiko told me later she could not remember the last time she saw a Japanese movie in a theater and found it ironic to have seen one in Canada.

Good Husband Points.
