Guest speaker at UBC
This morning I spoke to students at the Sauder School of Business at UBC. I was specifically asked to tell them about experiences working in the US, Japan and Asia.
I purposely avoided making it a lecture or presentation; not using PowerPoint, etc. It was classic story-telling. Note: the image displayed on the screen behind me is my website. I was thankful I was not wearing the same shirt this morning!
The theme for my talk was "living and working beyond your boundaries". I explained these boundaries might often be geographic ones but also could include academic, cultural and even comfort boundaries. Yoshiko attended it and I acknowledged her as being one of the best things about the time spent in Japan.
I don't mind speaking in public but always review and critique myself afterward. And feel relieved when it is all "said and done". In the end, it is not about me but the rewarding nature of supporting, assisting and shared learning with the upcoming generation.
