Lowering my expectations

I have started to tell people, "Once I started to lower my expectations of the world, I feel much better". Based on what I see on social media, news and personal interaction, we hold others to very high expectations. And we are very critical when those expectations are not met.
Over the past couple of weeks I have been disappointed and let down by people to whom I have placed trust. Perhaps this is indicative of the world now. I don't like it but getting mad over it is unlikely to make any difference.
Instead, I look inward and strive to ensure I hold myself to higher standards for others. As in, "two wrongs don't make a right". I have a choice about my own actions and hold myself accountable to them.
I will always take the higher road.
