2018 UBC Grads
This year I volunteered to be a host at the UBC Graduation events and worked at the Alumni Center for three days. The graduation ceremonies were held at the Chan Center and the grads were invited afterward to drop by the Alumni Center with their familes for refreshments.
My role was to stand at the entrance and welcome/congratulate the grads. The feeling was much like standing at the international arrivals area of an airport and watching the emotions of friends and family reunited. The grads could barely contain their excitement and parents beamed with pride.
My motivation was two-fold. First, since UBC is my home, I always look for ways to give back to the community. Besides, I have the time. Also, I never got the chance (yet) to be a graduate. Maybe some day. I enjoyed sharing in the celebration with students of all ages.
