A change in our morning coffee
A fresh pot of coffee has always been a staple in our morning routine. I am not fanatical about the process but I do insist on buying whole beans and using a burr grinder to grind the beans just prior to the brewing process (usually an auto drip).
For years, including several in Tokyo, my preference was Costco's Kirkland Signature House Blend, which is supplied by Starbucks. Good value, consistent and a great morning joe.
This week I thought we should step it up a little and try something different. I dropped by the 49th Parallel Café in Kitsilano to buy some of their roasted beans. They are consistently ranked as one of the top roasters in Vancouver.
I described to the staff what we currently drink and our preferences. They recommended the Ethiopian Kayon Mountain. Along with some espresso beans, I took home 340 gm of the bean.
The next morning I cleaned the grinder and brewed a pot of the new bean. Holy smokes. A completely different coffee experience. Very acidic and sharp taste. Yoshiko liked it but not me. Maybe I need to stick with what I know and what I like. Another attempt this morning didn't improve my impressions.
Back to Costco coffee tomorrow morning.
