Tofino's Trainer Check-in

Okay, perhaps we have become "helicopter parents" to our dog. Tofino is just past ten months of age and possesses amazing intelligence. As owners we understand the responsibilities and importance of good training during her puppy years. We are fortunate to have the time to invest in her training.

Still, the path of training Tofino has been anything but smooth. She learns quickly but often displays mischievous behavior and somewhat sporadic personalities.

I asked our wonderful dog trainer Sarah to visit us today and observe her behavior. I was not fishing for compliments. I wanted a neutral assessment of how Tofino is doing relative to her age. And to get a road map for the way forward.

I could quickly detect Sarah's smile when I described our concerns. I think she has seen this movie before. Sarah quickly assured us Tofino is still very much a puppy and typical of her age. She just needs ongoing, consistent and loving attention as she grows up through these adolescent and teenage dog years.

We have a good walk and training session on the leash. I felt relieved and invigorated after the session. Dog training is not an easy endeavor but the rewards are worth it.
