More beans please
Today's volunteer assignment at the UBC Farm was the first day of harvesting green beans. Three hours of gently uncovering the beans beneath the leaves and selecting those ready for the market.
One needs to pick the beans in a manner that keeps the stem and does not damage the bean. Several of us commented that our fingers were growing sore from the repetitive picking. Also, the beans grow very close to the ground, requiring kneeling down in the dirt.
In the end, the five of us harvested about 70kg of beans and even got in some weeding in the herb garden before the end of the shift.
