Unable to travel... not so bad

As a result of many factors, my wife Yoshiko and I are unable to travel together for a vacation. In fact, we haven't been on a real vacation since 2010. While our relocation to Canada was one of the factors, our cats and their aging has been the primary influence. When they were young it was a simple process of finding a cat sitter who would take care of them in our home.

As their ages progressed and health issues increased, it simply became impossible to leave them in the care of someone else. We felt only we could recognize and respond to serious changes in health and situations requiring immediate care. And we would be unable to relax and enjoy a vacation wondering all the time if the cats are okay.

We are down to one cat now and today is Spago's 21st birthday. His health is stable but always a concern to us. He needs daily LRS solution injections and numerous medicines for his kidneys. Yoshiko and I take turns sleeping with him each night in the media room at home. This is the way it has been for more than two years... far more if you include the other cats.

Many friends have kindly offered to take care of Spago, even for just one night or weekend so we can get away. These offers are greatly appreciated. But we have adjusted our lives to accommodate the needs of our cat. We are fortunate to have a wonderful home in Vancouver and no need to be working full-time. For me, after a long career with frequent business travel, I am not missing airports, strange beds and high calorie meals.

Someday we will travel again. For now, our priority is a 2.86 kg ball of fur who still enjoys a good cuddle.
